Onpage optimization for Search Engines
(11 tips)
1. Make
sure that your title contains your main keyword and is less than 10 words long.
“Search
Engine Optimization Information” is much better than
“Test
Company.com – providing all of your search engine optimization needs whenever
you want it!”
2.
Make sure that the text for linkage relates
to the title of the page it links to.
Also, make sure that the name of the webpage file relates to your topic. For
example, if you were creating a webpage about viruses , an ideal name of the web
page would be:
Cat_viruses.htm
If
this webpage was being linked to, an ideal example link would be:
<a
href="cat_viruses.htm">Cat viruses</a>
3. Use <h1></h1> and
<h2></h2> links. Try to keep your keyword present in these links, and try
not to make these links very long(5 words maximum to be safe) .
4. Place a bold a few of the
keyword phrases throughout the content but don’t overdue this. (It can get
very annoying for users).
5. Make sure your navigation
structure is clear and simple. Have text-based links and information on
each page. Javascript links are’nt normally detected by search engines.
6. A site map is very
useful. In the most simple terms, it is a webpage that links to all pages on your
website. This helps significantly
in getting more pages indexed by search engines. However, the site map should be
broken up into pages if there are more than 100 links or a website may be
considered some sort of linking site and may incur a penalty.
7. Try to avoid the use of
excessive flash and as said previously, javascript. Its very difficult for search engine spiders to
crawl websites of this nature and could affect your placement in search engine
rankings. Your webpage may not even show up at all because it cannot be crawled!
8. Use meta tags, the right
way - Description should have 15-25 words and use less than 10 keyword phrases
in the keyword META tags. Keyword should be repeated by no more than 3
times. Try to use as few keywords possible for keywords E.g
<META
NAME="Description" CONTENT="Web host provider">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT=" Web host, web host provider,
web host information">
In this example, ‘web host
’ is recurring and we’ve only used for unique words in the keyword list.
This is ideal.
Try and get your content and
keywords as close to the top of the <body> tag as possible by eliminating
unnecessary HTML code from your web pages.
9. Try to place your keywords
and important content in the first 30 words of your content and your last
paragraph. Important is placed on these parts of the webpage and could show that
your website is more ‘relevant’ for
a search request.
10. Sprinkle your keywords
right throughout evenly throughout the document.
11. Use
ALT and TITLE with your images regularly but not too often. ALT is basically the
text that would come up instead of an image, if the image could not load.
An example of this
would be :
<img border="0"
src="catland.jpg" alt="cat land pic" title="cat land
pic">
